Our Story
ISTMO TENNIS ACADEMY was founded in March 2025 with a clear vision:
to create a space in Panama where tennis would be more than a sport,
a tool for growth, discipline, and personal development.
The name Istmo means connection. Just as Panama connects continents,
our academy connects children and adults with their best version, on and off the court.
We connect effort with progress, passion with technique, and discipline with results.
From the start, the goal was to offer structured training,
an indoor court, and a professional environment that would ensure consistency
and development throughout the year.
Today, in 2026, we continue to grow as a community committed to
excellence, respect, and continuous improvement.
Michael Vargas – Director & Head Coach
Michael Vargas is a former player for Panama, an International Tennis Federation (ITF) certified coach, and a sports entrepreneur with international academic training in business and administration.
From a young age, he represented Panama in international junior tournaments across the region, an experience that gave him a deep understanding of tennis through competitive demands and high performance. That stage forged the discipline, mindset, and resilience he now passes on to his students in every training process.
In 2005, he earned an athletic scholarship to study and compete at Lindenwood University, in St. Charles, MO, USA. There he was part of the university tennis team while completing his Bachelor’s degree in International Business and Marketing, graduating in 2009. Later, in 2011, he completed his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) at the same university, strengthening his strategic and business vision.
Committed to professional development in sports, in 2019 he earned a Diploma in Sports Administration from the Panamanian Olympic Committee, endorsed by the University of Panama.
Technical Certifications:
- ITF Level 1 – 2016
- ITF Level 2 – 2023
Upon returning to Panama, he combined his professional career in real estate and construction with his passion for teaching tennis. He worked as a tennis instructor at the Club de Golf de Panamá until 2020, and later continued as an independent coach — a period during which he refined his methodology and structured the strategic plan for an academy with a modern, sustainable vision.
That vision first took shape with Vargas Tennis Academy in July 2021, and later, in March 2025, with the founding of Istmo Tennis Academy, a project designed to develop well-rounded athletes under professional standards of organization, planning, and sports development.
Today, as Director and Head Coach, Michael doesn’t just coach technique and tactics. He designs processes, builds training systems, develops talent from an early age, and promotes values such as discipline, respect, teamwork, and a competitive mindset.
His approach combines international experience, solid academic training, and business leadership, positioning Istmo Tennis Academy as a structured, modern academy focused on the sustainable growth of tennis in Panama.
